Try Android's app exception
- Open Android Settings.
- Open Modes or Sound & vibration, then Do Not Disturb.
- Open Notification filters, Apps or an equivalent “allowed interruptions” section.
- Select the app and choose the interruptions it may send.
- Also inspect the app's notification categories and make sure the relevant category is alerting and has a sound.
The labels differ on Pixel, Samsung and other devices. Android's own settings can also handle calls from selected people, messages, repeat callers, alarms, reminders and priority conversations.
When DND Override adds value
A native exception commonly operates at the app or notification-category level. DND Override is for finer conditions inside the posted notification:
| Need | Best starting point |
|---|---|
| Every notification from one app | Native Android app exception |
| Only one notification category | Native notification-channel settings, if the app provides a useful category |
| Only notifications containing “urgent” | DND Override app + keyword rule |
| Different sound for matching text | DND Override rule with a selected sound |
| Calls from favorite contacts | Native Android People/Calls exception |
How the app rule works
Grant Android notification access, create a rule, choose the installed app and optionally add text conditions. With no keyword, every eligible newly posted notification from that package can match. With keywords, both the app and text condition must match. Matching remains on-device.
DND Override observes notifications and plays a separate sound; it does not grant the selected app a system-level DND exception.
Check before relying on it
Set alarm volume above zero, keep notification access enabled and send a test notification while DND is active. Device makers may restrict background components, and some notifications do not expose complete visible text. Treat the result as a convenience, not a safety guarantee.
Need finer control? Continue to keyword alerts or camera alerts during DND.
