How to make selected urgent notifications audible during DND

Start with Android's built-in urgent paths

Android Modes and Do Not Disturb can allow calls, messages, selected people, repeat callers, priority conversations, apps, alarms and other interruptions. A messaging app may also provide a dedicated notification category for important conversations. Use those controls first when they describe the need accurately.

When an urgent-message rule adds value

Suppose a family or work group produces many notifications, but messages containing wording such as “urgent,” “call me,” or another agreed phrase need a distinctive sound. DND Override can combine the selected messaging app with one or more literal keywords. The notification must come from that app and its visible title or message must contain the configured text.

Literal matching can ignore letter case and can require any keyword or every keyword. The app can also apply a text-only rule across apps, but an app-and-keyword rule is normally safer because it reduces accidental matches.

What the app can and cannot infer

DND Override does not read contacts or understand urgency semantically. It only checks the package name and notification text Android exposes. A message is not “urgent” unless it matches the rule you defined. It does not guarantee delivery, contact emergency services, retry missed alerts, or stop a playing sound when the original notification is dismissed.

Family and emergency wording

For family communication, agree on an uncommon phrase, test the exact messaging app, and keep a native calling exception as a backup. Do not describe this as an emergency-alert or medical-alert system. Official emergency alerts, certified medical systems and safety-critical monitoring require their own supported delivery paths.
